The lifeblood of Mariupol: Iron & Steel

Our drive to the orphanage takes about 20 minutes.

Misha was our driver when we were here in 2007, and we hired him again this time. He's very nice and so reliable - speaks NO English, but we manage to get by.

We pass the steel plant - Azovstal Iron & Steel Works - on our way to the orphanage. We've been told this is the largest steel plant in all of Europe. It is HUGE. Pictures don't do it justice.
And the pollution is beyond what you can imagine - again, pictures simply cannot capture what the air looks like here. Can't wait to breath some fresh air!
