Ukraine doesn't bend the rules for celebrities

Apparently Elton John made an appearance in a city not too far from William's home town over the weekend. He visited an orphanage for HIV-infected children, and felt a particular attraction to one little boy, 14-month old Lev, expressing his desire to pursue Lev's adoption. I knew that if Ukraine held him to the same standards as it holds other PAPs (potential adoptive parents), he would not be allowed to adopt for 2 reasons: 1) he is not traditionally married, and 2) he is more than 45 years older than the child.

And as it turns out, Ukraine is in fact sticking to their laws and according to THIS STORY, will not allow him and his partner David to petition the adoption of Lev.

My hope is that he doesn't use this as a reason to berate the Ukrainian government and authorities for laws that are already in place. I am personally glad to see a country who doesn't put celebrities before everyday people. Instead, I am hopeful that Mr. John will use his status and exposure to advocate for these children, and will take an active role in finding homes for them and others with special needs in Ukraine whose future is so bleak.

Personally I was hoping they would let him adopt this little one. It is not like he does not have the money to give a child a wonderful life.
I understand the homosexual part but with so many little ones needing a family and someone with his reputation and money to provide for them, then he should be allowed to adopt. Just think of how much publicity these kids would get if they do change their minds.
I am keeping my fingers crossed that he can get the decision reversed.

Thanks for sharing your opinions. But the biggest argument I have with you is where you said "It is not like he does not have the money to give a child a wonderful life". I personally believe there is so much more to providing a wonderful life than money. What about the fact that most of his time is spent on the road (his argument against adoption up until now), and his age? I know there are exceptions, but I don't know many people that close to retirement age that would have the energy to give what it takes for a 14-month-old. I guess his money could pay for really good nannies, and the child would be cared for, but the child's parents are not having an active role in his/her life.

And just think of how much publicity these children could get if instead of spending his time, money and energies on fighting the UA gov't (and I'm not saying he plans to do that), he could advocate for these children, maybe create a foundation for families that want to adopt but simply cannot afford the adoption costs.

There are others out there that are in positions to help these children, but are either too old, or are not married (singles or alternative lifestyles). What does it say to them if the gov't allows him to adopt? It's okay for you since you're famous and have unlimited funds. But we won't let anyone else.

That's just my two cents!

Again, thanks for sharing and for your honesty. But next time, please be willing to share who you are as well, so I can have an idea of who's participating in our blog. Thanks :)

It makes me sad that people think it's better for a child to wait for a family than to live with a loving same sex couple. I understand the age concern, and I don't see Elton berating the government, I think he just genuinely fell in love with this child, like so many of us fall in love with the kids of RR.

Also, since this country is discriminating against him based on his sexuality, I feel like he would be more likely to focus his efforts on helping those like him adopt, but that would require a country or state that allows same sex couples to adopt.

It's interesting to see the reaction to him, compared to Madonna, a single mother who is currently on tour, and who broke rules to get her adoption finalized. But she's a straight woman... so some people seem more comfortable having her adopt

Also, I doubt that he's going to fight. But I think he might be a little heartbroken. And who can blame him? That boy is such a cutie pie!

I agree that there is WAY more to a good family than money. In fact, my parents always said "we aren't gonna be rich, but we've got a lot of love"

and I'd rather have love than money!

Molly, thanks for sharing! I don't agree with anyone getting to break the rules because of celebrity status. This one of course caught my attention because 1) it's our son's home country and 2) I was glad to see a country NOT making an exception simply based on the person's reputation/fame/money.

I don't think there is any reason why a celeb should get to jump to the head of the line. It just doesn't make sense. If anything, seeing how long the process is to adopt should make them realize how hard it must be for those without their status and wealth!!

I think it's a good reminder that fame and money do not equal a great life. Look at all the children of celebs who are in rehab and running around half naked. LOVE makes a family.
